When I was creating my Fun List last November, one of the items I added was to take skate skiing lessons. I figured that was an easy one to accomplish. I had bought the skis and boots last winter, and had learned the basics from my partner. I was all set, ready to go.

And then … there was no snow. 2011/12 will go down in history as “the winter that wasn’t”.

Sure, we’ve had the occasional dusting. And sometimes a pretty good blanketing. But it always happened on a weekend and by Monday we’d have a day of rain. So when the lessons rolled around on Wednesday, the snow would be gone once again.

For the first few weeks, the organizers weren’t too concerned. “It’s happened before,” they’d say. “Don’t worry. We always manage to get the six lessons in before the end of winter.”

Week after week went by. One week was almost promising. Snow on Monday, still there on Tuesday, and then it rained.

Finally last week, there was an email announcing defeat. It had never happened in the ski club’s history. Mother Nature had triumphed over our winter plans. And so I’ll have to wait til next winter to try again.

Of course, I can still go skiing, provided I drive up north where there is snow. But I can’t take those precious skate ski lessons that are item #12 on my Fun List.

What to do? What to do??
