Learning As I Go

I love to learn. As a result, I’m always trying new things on for size. This has led to quite a few career changes – at least a dozen since graduating from university – and, therefore, not a lot of retirement security. But it’s been fun! And I’ve found that all of the experiences eventually weave themselves together into whatever my next step is.

I also love to share what I’ve learned. Sometimes that’s been through writing (newspaper columns, letters to the editor, articles and a book). Other times, it’s been through workshops. I’ve also taught classes and courses (ice dancing, French, Spanish, English as a Second Language).

I’m challenging myself this weekend to teach something new, and I’m feeling a familiar mix of excitement and anxiety. There’s the rush of stepping into unknown territory, trusting the flow, and feeling the high that comes with accomplishing a goal. There’s also fear about messing up, saying the wrong thing, forgetting what to do next and losing face.

Fortunately, I’m co-facilitating with a wonderful friend and colleague, so it’s not all up to me (I have learned a few things over the years and sharing the load is one of them!) We’ve been well trained, and have spent several months preparing and working out all the details. We have students registered and we know we’re ready. Now it’s just a question of leaping into the moment and seeing where it takes us.

Gulp … bring it on!
