Just Another Day At The Dock

Sometimes when we go to the boat, we don’t sail. Imagine that. Having a sailboat and not taking it out on the water. We’ve discovered that it can be fun and relaxing to just sit at the dock and watch what’s happening in the marina.

Our slip is on the main route to the lake, so nearly all the boats pass by ours as they head out for the day. Big boats, little boats, power boats, sailboats, all colours and shapes imaginable. And every day brings adventure.

Here’s a photo sampling of one such day. There are more photos on the Photos and Quotes page. I apologize for the photo quality. I forgot to take my camera with me and had to resort to using the one on my phone. At least I was able to capture the moments!

The caption I imagine for this photo is “Get me down!!!” But in reality, he was sorting out some of the rigging on the sailboat. It made for a great photo 🙂

Hmmm, who has the right of way?

The yellow sailboat did not have a motor, so they were sailing it out of the marina, tacking back and forth as power boats (and motorized sailboats) came up on all sides. The sailboat did have the right of way, of course, although I’m sure some of the power boat owners were feeling rather impatient.

Purple martins flocking

No, it’s not some weird sign in the clouds. One morning the sky was filled with thousands of purple martins, swooping and diving and calling to each other. They were landing on the tops of all the masts and filled this television antenna to the point where there was no metal showing. I do wish I’d had my zoom lens for this one.

And it wouldn’t be a day at the dock without at least one boat being towed in. This sailboat just passed by ours when suddenly its motor fell off. It ended up dangling in the water, leaving them with no control. Fortunately there was a power boat in the channel behind them and they immediately came alongside preventing them from drifting into nearby moored boats. Quick thinking and fast action on both sides!
