Fudging The Numbers

Normally I’m a stickler for perfection. However, there are a couple of items on my list that I’ve sort of accomplished, so I’m giving myself permission to cross them off. The reasons why I didn’t do them were due to circumstances beyond my control.

#12 – Take skate ski lessons

I did try to do this last winter, honest! I signed up for classes, had all my gear ready to go and .. we didn’t get any snow! It was the winter that wasn’t. We had the occasional skiff of the white stuff, but it always melted by the time the night for classes came around. So I have signed up again in the hope that this winter there will be snow.

Fingers crossed!

#9 – Learn a flamenco solo to “Dreams” by Juneyt

I heard Juneyt play this particular song a year ago during a September open-air concert at Waterloo Town Square. The music sent ripples of excitement through my body and I could already envision myself dancing to it. I spoke to him after and asked about it (I have his CD and it’s not on there) and he hadn’t recorded it yet. He said he’d make me a copy so I could work with it.

I showed up occasionally where he was playing over the next six months, gently asking, but he is very busy. The recording didn’t materialize. So I’ve done the next best thing.

A friend of mine and I are creating a flamenco duet to one of the songs on Juneyt’s current CD, Ocean. We started on it last spring and plan to continue working on it this winter.

So, as far as I’m concerned, that’s as close as I can get to crossing this one off my list. As for performing the duet, I’ll keep you posted!

Kick Up Your Heels!

I’m a dancer. As a child, I took ballet. In my thirties, I tried ballroom (and loved it!) The dances were familiar to me because I’d done them for many years on the ice (I was a figure skater). And the music! I grew up listening to the tunes from the Big Band era – my parents’ favorites. The only challenge was finding a good partner.

Eventually I moved on to belly dancing and, more recently, flamenco.

But I think my heart belongs to ballroom.

So you’ll understand why I found this video so inspiring.

Go ahead. Watch it.

And see if you aren’t kicking up your heels and smiling with delight by the end!

A great example of being young, fabulous and full of fun.  🙂

Olé!

I must have had Spanish ancestors. Years ago, when I lived in Spain, I felt at home. The language, culture, music, food seemed as familiar as my own heartbeat. I fell in love, with the country, the people … and one young man in particular. The personal romance didn’t last, but the delight with all things Spanish continues to give my life meaning.

Flamenco music (guitar, percussion, voice) has always spoken to my soul. Nearly a decade ago, I also started learning to dance flamenco. I love its many challenges (intricate footwork, unusual rhythms), and the way it pushes me to strive for ever greater levels of excellence. Our dance troupe, Sol y Sombra, performs in various places during the year. There’s nothing more exciting for me, than donning ruffled flamenco dresses in bold colours, pulling hair back and adding a bright flower, and sharing my passion for dance with an audience.

In my element ...

Last week, we went to see a performance by the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company. Esmeralda is legendary for the quality of her dancers, the uniqueness of costumes and choreography as well as the brilliance of the musicians. She began her dance company 30 years ago and is touring this year in celebration.

As always, the evening was inspiring. As a dancer, I watched the footwork, trying to pick up the intricacies of the moves, and the arm and hand movements (making mental notes of what to focus on when I go back to the studio to practice). But mostly, I was mesmerized by Esmeralda herself, a petite dynamo with a sleek physique who dances as if she’s fifteen years old (she’ll only admit to being over fifty). I watched her flexibility and agility and reminded myself that age doesn’t need to be a limiting factor.

I’m revved up and ready to go for another flamenco season! Thanks for the inspiration, Esmeralda!

For those interested in seeing more, the Esmeralda Enrique Spanish Dance Company will be performing on May 11 at 8 p.m. at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga. Definitely an evening to remember!
